Instability of plumes driven by localized heating

چکیده
Plumes due to localized buoyancy sources are of wide interest owing to their prevalence in many situations. This study investigates the transition from laminar to turbulent dynamics. Several experiments have reported that this transition is sensitive to external perturbations. As such, a well-controlled set-up has been chosen for our numerical study, consisting of a localized heat source at the bottom of an enclosed cylinder whose walls are all maintained at a fixed uniform temperature, except for the localized heat source. At moderate Rayleigh numbers Ra, the flow consists of a steady, axisymmetric purely poloidal plume. On increasing Ra, the flow undergoes a supercritical Hopf bifurcation to an axisymmetric ‘puffing’ plume, where a vortex ring is periodically emitted from the localized heater. At higher Ra, this state becomes unstable to a sequence of symmetry-breaking bifurcations, going through a quasiperiodic ‘fluttering’ stage where the axisymmetric rings are tilted, and other states in which the sequence of tilted rings interact with each other. The sequence of symmetry-breaking bifurcations in the transition to turbulence culminates in a torus breakup event in which all the spatial and spatio-temporal symmetries of the system are broken.

Dynamics of plumes driven by localized heating in a stably stratified ambient
The transition from laminar to complex spatio-temporal dynamics of a plume driven by a localized heat source at the bottom of an enclosed cylinder whose sidewall is maintained at a fixed temperature which varies linearly up the wall is studied. Restricting the dynamics to the axisymmetric subspace, the first instability is to a puffing state. However, for smaller Grashof numbers, the plume beco...
متن کاملRayleigh-Taylor Instabilities from Hydrous Melting Propel "Cold Plumes" at Subduction Zones
It is commonly thought hot diapiric flows prevail in the mantle wedge above the subducting slab. However, hydration and partial melting along the slab can create a situation in which a Rayleigh-Taylor instability can develop at the top of a cold subducting slab. We have modelled numerically with a high-resolution 2-D regional model this parodoxically interesting geological phenomenon in which r...
متن کاملA model for the temperature-dependence of tidal dissipation in convective plumes on icy satellites: Implications for Europa and Enceladus
To explain the formation of surface features on Europa, Enceladus, and other satellites, many authors have postulated the spatial localization of tidal heating within convective plumes. However, the concept that enhanced tidal heating can occur within a convective plume has not been rigorously tested. Most models of this phenomenon adopt a tidal heating with a temperature-dependence derived for...
متن کاملResonant Response of Deep Convection to Surface Hot Spots
Observations show substantial variations of the intensity of tropical and/or summertime deep convection on land that are not explained by standard measures of convective instability. One feature that distinguishes land surfaces is their heterogeneity. The possible importance of this is investigated here by calculating the response of a nonrotating atmosphere to localized, transient surface heat...
متن کامل22. Enceladus: An Active Cryovolcanic Satellite
Enceladus is one of the most remarkable satellites in the solar system, as revealed by Cassini’s detection of active plumes erupting from warm fractures near its south pole. This discovery makes Enceladus the only icy satellite known to exhibit ongoing internally-driven geological activity. The activity is presumably powered by tidal heating maintained by Enceladus’ 2:1 mean-motion resonance wi...
